AB: We're not playing well as a batting unit
Captain AB de Villiers conceded South Africa's batsmen did not succeed in pairs, after Pakistan secured the first ODI by 23 runs at Newlands in Cape Town on Sunday.
Fast bowlers Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel reduced the visitors to a precarious 131 for seven, before debutant all-rounders Bilawal Bhatti and Anwar Ali pushed the score to 208 for five - and finally 218 for nine.
The Proteas' pursuit was largely inadequate, with the returning Jacques Kallis' 50 and the left-handed JP Duminy's 49 the highest in a final total of 195 all out in 48.1 overs, with Bhatti and Ali sharing five key wickets.
"We thought our bowlers did a fantastic job. We got on top, getting them seven down. Overall I think we did really well to keep them down to 218. Pressure on the batsmen again to finish it off," said de Villiers.
"We're not playing well as a batting unit. We got partnerships going first but not so in the chase, under pressure. The pitch was not bad. It did slow down towards the end. We fumbled under pressure.
I thought 240 was a par score here. All we can do it sit down, talk to the experienced players. Everyone must come to the party. Kallis is a class player. We'll leave it at that."
The International Cricket Council, meanwhile, has fined Steyn for using offensive language in Friday's second Twenty20 International against the same opposition.
The right-arm pace ace, who admitted to the charge, conceded 10 percent of his match fee - after swearing shortly after being struck for six by opener Ahmed Shehzad.
