Multi Screen Media (MSM) is set to launch its second sportschannel, Sony Kix, riding the popularity of the Indian PremierLeague (IPL).
The channel will start telecasting IPL Season 8 matches with commentaryin Tamil, Telugu and Bengali, apart from Hindi and English.
It will be beamed nationally alongside Sony Max, the official broadcaster of the twenty20 cricket league.
The tournament is starting on April 8 and the final is on May 24. Once the IPL is over, Sony Kix will telecast other sporting events on which MSMhas broadcasting rights. The company launched its first sports channel, Sony Six, in 2012 and has broadcast rights of FIFAWorld Cup, IPL, Total Nonstop Action Wrestling and several footballing events.
"A second channel will help scale up the sporting properties that we own," said Rohit Gupta, president of MSM. "Moreover, sometimes, two tournaments happen at the same time.
A second channel will help tackle this," Gupta added. He said the channel will primarily broadcast sporting events in Hindi and English but for special events it will have local language feeds as well. "Regional language feeds will be only for big sporting events. Otherwise you can't monetise it. Maybe, for FIFA Euro we will look at having regional language feeds on Sony Kix."
For IPL 8, the new channel will not sell any ad space. "The ad breaks on Sony Kix during IPL will be same as Sony Max.
"The plan is to sell ad inventory from second year onwards when it has a sizeable viewership," said a top media planner, who didn't wish to be named. "I am not sure if the broadcaster has enough content to run a second sports channel..... :D
